Autumn Masquerade

48932217293_4705962fe1_4k.jpgAutumn by Whimsy Winx, on Flickr

So Sasy invited me to tag along to a masquerade ball being held by The Fashion Loft. I’ve not been to a formal event in years. #platformdwelling So, there was some shopping to do. I decided it’s October, autumn, there was a high chance of many attending would go with a gothic or Halloween theme, in additional to very formal and elaborate. I’m pleased to say I calculated correctly. A few were horror/gothic, most were black or red gowns.

I went with Autumn as my theme and wanted to keep it very simple. I found this great mask first, a gacha from HEXtraordinary, and went from there for aesthetic. I knew it might be a challenge to find a good fit color wise, then I recalled the immense number of gowns from my past social life I collected long ago that hadn’t even been worn yet and with BOM now in effect I had many options. So glad Slink has come out with the Slink Physique Hourglass Mesh Body Bundle (Redux)! Very pleased that I can wear some fantastic system skins I have like the Isla skin by League.

I haven’t been a huge fan of mesh gowns as I don’t care for the movement waist down due to rigging, so I deep dived for some flexi. I revisited my Last Call, and Nicky Ree stash. However, nothing matched the tones of my mask I had already selected and was determined to use.

A quick review of Marketplace turned up this lovely autumn gown by Caverna Obscura. It’s available in a few autumn gradients, and I went with brown in case there was someone else with the same idea, they would likely go with the “Pumpkin” option which was more vibrant. The dress did not come with any alphas, so I found an alpha from a slip dress that worked.

The mask and dress were a great match. I tinted some gold opera gloves (system layer) from Adam n Eve to match the bodice. I eschewed jewelry and went with some particle sparkles in gold and green from Cole’s Corner which are currently available at Uber. Since I haven’t actually shopped in a while for formal wear or even purposely chosen an updo for such purposes I went with a half up half down style from Kuni. It was pulling out older content and I was pleased with how well much of it held up since mesh. Looking forward to hopefully wearing some in the near future.

More Houseboats Are Coming!

47853360331_dce030a508_k.jpgMore Houseboats Are Coming! by Whimsy Winx, on Flickr

If you’ve been waiting for that dream houseboat get ready! According to Patch Linden, in less than 24 hours …40 regions of houseboats are coming! Yes, 40!

46937055495_8ae0006e43_b.jpgSecond Life Map by Whimsy Winx, on Flickr

The map shows the regions have been moved into place and are located to the east of the Bellisseria landed regions. As yet there appears to be no causeway and/or bridge leading to this area. So those within the boating community should be delighted. It’s only a short trip via watercraft.

There is still a considerable amount of land that is heavily landscaped with public areas for gathering. Lovely beaches, conversation areas, picnic areas, and cuddle spots are dotted all over them. So get ready, I also imagine there will be some leaving the landed Linden Homes to try for them so you might even get an opening for a parcel if you’re lucky.  F5 is your friend.  Linden Homes are available for premium residents. Check out premium membership details at Second Life.

Halloween 2010 Look of the Day

I pulled together a couple of everyday looks for Halloween. Mostly based around Eclectic Apparel ‘s Calypso dress. She did a Halloween themed set as well for some added fun. The hair is fun, and from Ploom, and quite a deal, as is the pumpkin filled with treats from Albero’s Gatcha festival going on. The Sylfie’s shoes are oldies but goodies, all prim wonders. The Idiosyncrasy skin is a Halloween deal, and was/is available for $10L, currently she has another in store with a cool zipper under the eye. Enjoy. Happy Halloween!

Call for Couture – Sneak Peek – Vanitas Vesture

Call for Couture - Vanitas Vesture
Call for Couture - Vanitas Vesture

Second Life –  Call for Couture starts October 10th!  Designers were asked to create a couture item for auction (50% of this auction final price will go to the charity), and a pret-a-porter (ready to wear) variation (not limited edition).   The designs are captivating!  The first design that caught my eye was created by SarahTheRed Aurbierre of Vanitas Vesture.  She’s a talented designer, who was also recently seen at the Wear Grey event.  Her couture item is definitely a hot ticket.  Her designs were inspired by tale of The Walrus and the Carpenter, which next to the Jabberwocky is my most favorite of Carroll’s writings.   Her couture gown is stunning!  A longer gown then her ready to wear version, its skirt is comprised of oysters.

Call For Couture - Vanitas Vesture

The ready to wear is a knee length dress, with sexy cowl neckline, and backless.  Available in many colors, it was quite hard to choose which I wanted, and I may go back for the rest.  I loved each and every variation.  Shown here I have the Camel which I thought was amazingly chic, all in beige, that graduated to taupe at the skirt.  Featuring an oyster hat perched on my Camelia hair from Dernier Cri, accessorized with jewelry from Zaara, and this lovely skin from eStyle Exquisite, that I can’t wait to get a chance to do a skin blog post on.  My cute G Field Square-toe Shoes complete the look.

Hair: Dernier Cri – Camelia
Lashes:  Amacci – Eyelashes “Belle” – Black
Skin:  eStyle Exquisite – Paris X3 – tan 6
Necklace: Zaara – Parnini Necklace
Dress:  Vanitas Vesture – Wonderland – Epigram Dress – Camel
Manicure: Mandala – Takara Nail/Brown
Bangles: Zaara – Pallav clear bracelets
Shoes:  G Field – Square-toe Shoes – Sophie – Brown
Poses: Long Awkward Pose

The Classic was fun little dress for a warm autumn day.  Starting with the cowl neck in squash that graduates to beige, then to a deep crimson at the skirt.   I played around with it and mixed  the cowl neck top with an apple green high waist skirt from Ingenue shown on the right. Complete with a makeup change but also from eStyle Exquisite, Nantucket Spectators shoes from Surf Couture in a complementary Pumpkin, as is the jewelry from fri.day. I completed the look with this cute hair from Frou-Frou, a nice formal updo that includes 3 styles of hair attachments all themed for fall.  They are a shiny metallic, one created from various hair textures in a variety of shades, and natural textures forming pumpkin, acorn and leaves, in a crown.

Hair: Frou-Frou – Gigi/Brick
Crown: Frou-Frou – Gigi Fall Crown – Nature
Lashes:  Amacci – Eyelashes “Belle” – Black
Skin:  eStyle Exquisite – Paris X3 – tan 4
Earrings: fri.day – Loop Earring – Jade
Manicure: Mandala – Takara Nail/Brown
Bangle: fri.day – Loop Bangles – Pumpkin
Shoes:  Surf Couture – Nantucket Spectators – Orange
Poses: Long Awkward Pose

Mina Paper Couture

Mina @ Hair Fair 2010
Mina @ Hair Fair 2010

Mina is a store that’s new to me this year, and it’s been fun to get to know them through their offerings this year.   My favorite at the fair is Stacey, which is a very relaxed updo, with attachable ponytail.  It comes with 2 variations of the updo portion, with, and without daisies.  The ponytail itself is also adorned with daisies.  Bonus it’s a charity hair, as well as the Thulani.  Thulani is a versatile unisex hair, as well as the Debbie, which is shown here in Cranberry.   Carice is a soft, mid-length hair, with a bit of a wave to it, very subtle, very nice. Hair Fair 2010 is ongoing through September 19th.  To see what stores or get slurls to it , click here.  For maps of all stores locations on each sim click here.  Check out the inworld demo group to pick up demos!  Know before you go!  This year Hair Fair charity hair styles, and bandana donations go to help pay for custom-made Wigs for Kids.  To get some tips on managing your settings for attendance at Second Life events like Hair Fair click here.

Paper Couture & Mina
Paper Couture & Mina

A while back someone posted a plurk highlight photos of a country wedding they had found on flickr.  We wondered over the splendid photography, and I was determined I would try to emulate some of the principles at play in them.  When I saw Paper Couture’s Crossroads dress, I was sure this was just the dress to attempt for this, partnered with this Stacey hair.  However I envisioned something a little more than what I settled for, as I really just don’t have the time to play around doing a full attempt at shadows in Kirsten.  So here it is, minus the shadows, extra props, lighting, etc, all that can happen another day.   The crossroads dress is a lovely mermaid style dress, with details over the bodice, very simple, very elegant.  It also comes with a grey shrug not shown here.  I have played it simple with the jewelry throwing on a turquoise and silver necklace from Zaara, and a pair of western boots (not viewable) from Adam n Eve, complete with Surf Couture, sheaf of wheat for my mouth.

Hair:  Mina Hair Fashion – Stacey – Dark Chocolate (With flowers) & Pony
Skin:  Chaisuki – Vienna – 08 Peach
Lashes:  Celestial Studio – Lashes – Club 3
Mouth Attachment:  Sand Shack Surf Couture – Chewing Wheat
Necklace:  Zaara – Vanisri – Wrapped Necklace – Turquoise-Silver
Bangles:  Zaara – Kaya – Turquoise Bracelet – Silver

I would especially like to thank Anais Fugue for her hospitality.

Clawtooth @ Hair Fair 2010
Clawtooth @ Hair Fair 2010

Bubbles Clawtooth, of the Tableau Clawtooths aka Clawtooth by Clawtooth, has made yummy hairs this year, many of them with a vintage origin.  The French Connection is tres chic, and very nautical at the same time oh la ahoy, viva la resistance!  The beret is texture change which gives you tons of options, and really hugs your head well accenting your bangs/fringe.  Other designs from Clawtooth this year are RockinRolls, a fun victory roll hair, follow up another victory roll hair he did awhile back.  I love it. My Shilova is a chic short hair that I think can go from casual to evening wear. It’s very 1930’s, yet very contemporary.  You’re A Star, is exactly old Hollywood glamour, it begs for a satin gown, and a tiered fur stole with tails.  Turnip Sorbet is Clawtooth’s charity hair, its very waif like, adorable, and versatile.

Mystic Bubbles French Connection

I loved the possibilities insinuated by this hair so I paired it with a navy peacoat from en Svale, and headed over to Mystic to take shadow photos.  They were quite fail for me, but luckily Sasy is better then me at it, and took these for me.   I’m also wearing a blue strip turtleneck from Coco, I love the effect of the sculpted bottom portion, specially with this shorter peacoat.  I have absolutely no idea whose shorts I am wearing, and my apologies to the creator.  I am usually able to recall such things easily, and didnt make notes at the time this photo was taken, 1 free item from my store to the first person who accurately names it, and it appears in my inventory.  I am afraid it’s the same with the makeup version of this Chaisuki skin, you will have to try on demos to find it,  it’s most likely in the Vienna line, peach tone, as I have been wearing those alot lately.

Cocktail Hour

Miel @ Hair Fair 2010
Miel @ Hair Fair 2010

It’s cocktail hour for Miel at Hair Fair 2010, with their line up of Cosmo, Martini, and their charity donation hair Mojito.    Cosmo and Martini are classics, and softly styled,  suitable for a variety of looks.   The showstopper is Mojito an amazing prim curly do thats chic, and could still easily be worn on child avatars ala Shirley Temple -ish.    Miel has gone from fashion to including hair at their store this year.  It’s always worth a look when they do a release to see what they have come up with, anything from their recent release of cowboy boots, to sculpted tops.  I am over the moon about some of the curly hairs at the fair this year, and this one of them. Miel’s hairs are available in 5 shades of each color group, Brown, Black, Blonde, Red.  I am wearing the 1 in each shade (cept Black).

Miel @ Hair Fair 2010
Miel @ Hair Fair 2010

I wanted to show of this hair and went for a slim pencil skirt from Ingenue.  Many people disregard systems skirts as relics in sl, I have to tell you thats simply not true.  Pencil skirts in general show off your rear in general, that’s the gimmick, while creating a slim look.  A system skirt will put some junk in your trunk due to the fact it can’t hug your butt cheeks, point blank.  The trick is left to designers at creation to keep the highlighting of the skirt to a minimum.  There should only be enough shading to make some natural wrinkles in the fabric and nothing more, specially near the rear or thighs. With the lower back half of the skirt becoming darker under the buttocks if any shading at all.  Ingenue, a vintage fashion house in Second Life knows the trick and has these lovely Secretary pencil skirts.  They come in a number of muted tones, with jacket layer upper high waist, and a prim option of peplum skirt toppers. I fell in love with them, and bought them all.  I topped off the skirt with this Bourgewhat? top from Veschi, it’s two toned, similarly hued to my skirt, and has prim collar and cuffs that just don’t stop.  I threw on my dream.booties from fri.day in Red, with my Ahi jewelry set from Miel.  I love the makeup on my Bruna skins from Glance, this one is Colour, and I find it really suits this style.

Fri.day’s offerings at Hair Fair 2010 are 3 soft styles, Fiona, Sasha, and their charity hair Lexi.  All three styles shown with Lexi the one on the far right being the one that donates a portion of the price to Wigs for Kids.  It’s a cute updo, with soft tendrils framing the face.  Fiona is a nice soft side sweep of hair.  Shown in Jaded Blond, they will be available ONLY at Hair Fair 2010 until September 19th, after that it will be available in Fri.day’s store.  Hair Fair 2010 is ongoing through September 19th.  To see what stores or get slurls to it , click here.   This year Hair Fair charity hair styles, and bandanas donations go to help pay for custom-made Wigs for Kids.

While I was initially was going to just feature the hairstyles themselves, once I had put on Sasha, I knew exactly I had to blog this dress I had tucked away, it had been waiting for this hair.  I went for a soft look overall, sticking to Jaded Blond as a hair shade.  The Sasha has this lovely scarf/ribbon, which is color-changeable,  I went with chocolate and chose to use that tone to accessorize with.  It took 24 hours of seriously thinking about who and where this dress was.  I knew I wanted this dress but couldn’t recall who made it, and if I even owned it.  I began a long hunt trolling all the stores featuring sculpted clothing (really known for it), and saw this at Aoharu and remembered I bought them in packs during their big sale months ago.  When I first bought it I tucked it away until I found accessories for it, and finally now I have them.  I love the look of Sasha with it,  teamed up with a dream catcher bag also from Fri.day, and these awesome mary jane jumps from G. Field.  Thanks to Winter Jefferson, for remembering where I could find them.  I love the big thick strap on them, with the color changeable trim and buckle.  So retro, so now, and so chic.  I went with one simple set of bracelets from Zaara, in lieu of heavy amounts of jewelry I love to wear.  I would have loved to see this look with perhaps a ribbon choker, a broach, and charm bracelet.

82nd Annual Academy Awards & Virtual Fashion

Whimsy Winx & Red Carpet Virtual Fashion

This evening I will be attending the LIVE Virtual Oscars Pre-Show, which made me wonder…what would Whimsy wear to the Oscars.  One has to carefully plan these things out.  One needs to consider what role they are to play in the evening.  Whimsy is an ‘It Girl’.   I’ve not produced, written, or starred in anything, or presenting, so the dress while chic shouldn’t overshadow anyone nominated for an award.   So as an ‘It Girl’ attending, I’m required to show up, look pretty, and act pleasant.  Pretty simple.  Maybe.  One has to consider the venue.  I will walk the red carpet, it’s a formal event.  Red, Black, and White will be colors people gravitate to because of the events nature.  I will leave that to others.  I could go for russet, but it looks wrong in the winter/spring.  Greens, are a go, but not for me today.  Swan feathers, and avant-garde have already been done.   It was a tough call but I went with spring as a theme.  I narrowed it down to two dresses.  Both flowered in theme- one avant-garde, one classic.  I chose this one, classic,  for the Oscars, as I didn’t want to be THAT girl in the avant-garde flower dress.  Not today.  That dress I will save for another event I want to stand out in.  Tonight I shall blend and enjoy the evening.

Harper Ganesvoort is having an Oscar Fashion Contest, this is my entry.  See the Flickr group.

Pooky’s Plastic Dreams

I met Pooky Amsterdam while filming a Step Up! video a couple of months ago.  She’s a real dynamo in inworld entertainment with television shows The 1st Question, and  The Dating Casino.   Pooky’s other talent is machinima.  Her most recent work is a video for the song Plastic Dreams by Ming Bridges.  Ming Bridges is a 2006 winner Teenage Icon by Teenage, a magazine for teens based in Singapore.   The video itself is charming, the set, and wardrobe dressed by Mimikri Kit, of Mimikri.  Pooky teamed up with Rick Roman (screenplay), and Rosco Boyd (director) to create a video you have to see.  It’s charming, and well themed for this time of year so close to Valentine’s Day.

If you are looking for more inworld entertainment, get dressed and come see television shows The 1st Question, and  The Dating Casino.  Filmed in front of an audience, and also available on the web, these are more examples of what makes Second Life so wonderful.  The 1st Question is “The fast-paced, fact-based, fun hour of science related merrymaking, audience participation, prizes, wit & wisdom.”;  it films every Tuesday at 7pm slt check their blog for a slurl to the studio, and to see their most recent episode.  The Dating Casino’s title pretty much sums it up.  A dating game of chance!  They are looking for contestants too, so if you wanna have some fun, either contact them be one, or come down for the taping and be apart of the audience.  The Dating Casino films on Sunday at 3pm SLT.  See blog for episodes and slurls.

Whimsy Winx Then & Now

I recently turned 3 years old (no there wasn’t a party we know that crashes the grid, but you may send chocolate and shoes), and had a chance via Sophia Harlow’s blog challenge to look back to the good old days. I very much appreciate how much Second Life has changed since I rezzed early January 2007.  Sculpties were just hitting the grid and no where near in the numbers they are used today.  Flexi hair was still newish.  Prim feet rare.  The residents were giants compared to the size of the average resident today.  A bad teleport didn’t mean you were logged out, or crashed, but hair, shoes, and any other prim attachment shoved up your non prim derriere. Bling was still king!  Professional shoppers, stylists, decorators were numerous.  I used to wonder at the thought of a virtual home, hiring people to take my photo, help me shop, and decorate my home.

I knew from playing The Sims 2 that there would be downloads for Second Life online, so while downloading the viewer I surfed.  I was shocked to find I would have to acquire everything inworld or make it.  I made notes from blogs like Linden Lifestyles, and those on Fashion Planet, of stores that I could find items I would want.  I read up on what camping was about, and salsa.   I took the term camping literally and couldn’t figure out how to camp the teepee’s behind The Free Dove, (ps if you are new and reading this there isn’t any camping there).  It was a lonely couple of days inworld, I didn’t talk to anyone, because they all wanted me in their dungeon, and had to learn what to do by people watching.  Finally after many hours trying to figure out how to send a notecard, I responded to an instant message from a guy who was stuck in an animation in the ground.  I figured you can’t harass me if you are in the ground.  He was looking for a way out of his glitch, and while I don’t recall if I was able to help, he was able to help me send a notecard.  He was only a few days older then me, and added me to his friends list. We would IM back and forth things we had learned as we camped and explored the grid.  He showed me how to camp, sit on a pose ball, and once he even logged into my account for me to mod my skirt so I could attend a fashion show.  Second Life can be overwhelming to a new resident, but its really the people that make it as great as it is.  Connecting to them allows us to learn so much about each other, and provides us with the ability to step away from our real life selves and learn new things.

That notecard he showed me how to send was for my free GuRL 6 hair.  I was in awe of the place, super pink and black decor, it was uber girlie, with amazing hair.  I lived at GuRLywood for a couple of days while a new resident, always returning there as a home base, and to log out at night.  Six Kennedy to me was the example of what you can do inworld.  She had a busy store, a whole sim, and a sexy fun look.  I used her as my base model of what to emulate to roughly fit in as a new resident.  Shown here in my 2007 photo is moi in GuRL 6 hair, and outfit, and Celestial Studio’s Charmed skin.  It’s a big difference, but many things besides my look have changed inworld.  I hope that it continues to grow, residents pursue content creation, explore, and live amazing virtual lives.

Sasy Scarborough, Arabella Steadham, and I were having a bit of fun in our Miel.   Arabella had these lovely boots, and Sasy had to have them, and after checking out the demos very carefully, I got them too.  I have this thing about shoes, I prefer my shoes esthetically to have a pointed toe.   It’s a funny thing about me.  After looking them over carefully and determining that the texture change was a real texture change and not a tint, I got them.  Whimsy can’t see tints, shes color blind like that inworld. To read Sasy’s blog post at SasyPants click here, and to read Arabella’s blog post on Arabella’s Amblings click here.

We all have recently binged at Miel and dove right into our Miel folders.  Miel is a lovely little store new to the grid, they are turning out clothes left and right to appease their new following.  I love their muted palette, and their sophisticated styling and their detail to textures. Their sculpted prim usage is good, they work very well to give you an extra dimension to your clothing. Their prices can’t be beat, and I believe they still have a store gift if you join their som inworld. I’m wearing their Bo shirt, its a lovely tank in this great espresso color, with a prim collar, the back has lovely detail giving added interest in the back since we have to look at our backs so much.

While Arabella wore the Hi Bar Tank, which I feel is really more of a tank dress, as a dress, I wore the pant layer and skirt prim as a skirt. This dress I love with the swatches of color, and pixel dot graphic I think its a modern chic look. For a bit of color I chose my favorite color to mix with brown ..turquoise. I have these plaid stockings from Nyte ‘n Day that were part of a join design project between Nyte ‘n Day and Luminosity in Fall of 2006. I admired these for a long time until I made my way in SL and was able to purchase them, so this outfit is a fond one for me. These boots are from Kitheres, totally scripted goodies and texture changable and resizable!

My hair is new from Diversity and available at Hair Fair 2009 called Daphne in Tootsie Brown. I have loved my skins from Rockberry, and went with a skin gift they recently offered.  More information about Hair Fair.

We took our photos at the public photostudio at The Deck, using a poses that were a recent release from LostAngel. You can try them out too, they are on top of the studio, in a VR Posestand. Use your VR HUD, or purchase one at VR Foundry also located at the deck, it will allow you to use any ones VR Posestand. For more details she this post, and their listing on Xstreet.

Anti-Bully
Anti-Bully

Children are taught to not bully.  When does it become acceptable, and justifiable for adults to bully?  So since people lately behave like little children bullying others about their designs, their blog posts, their photos, perhaps we need to re-educate them, and challenge them to grow up, and be responsible, proactive citizens.

No Bully says:

Bullying is when someone keeps doing or saying things to have power over another person.
Some of the ways they bully other people are by: calling them names, saying or writing nasty things about them, leaving them out of activities, not talking to them, threatening them, making them feel uncomfortable or scared, taking or damaging their things, hitting or kicking them, or making them do things they don’t want to do…

They may see it as a way of being popular, or making themselves look tough and in charge.
Some bullies do it to get attention or things, or to make other people afraid of them…

What can you do if you see someone else being bullied? If you see someone else being bullied you should always try to stop it. If you do nothing, you’re saying that bullying is okay with you.
It’s always best to treat others the way you would like to be treated.
